There is one main type of currency on Ancient Anguish: gold coins. You may encounter old coins or gold in other forms. These are generally not spendable as-is but can be sold/exchanged for standard gold coins at the bank or a general store.

Getting Money

Some of your first coins may come from generous players who like to dump coins on newbies. Charity is great, but don't just wander around town begging for coins from other players. You need to learn how to get money on your own, since you will be needing it on a regular basis for heals and other equipment, and maybe even a house someday.

As you advance your character and explore the world, you will develop a sense of which NPCs are good sources of coins or loot to sell.

When you are first starting out, your [[stats] are very low. You can't kill or carry much, and the NPCs you can kill don't usually have very valuable loot to sell. You can get a big jump start on coins and experience by delivering packages for the Commodities Exchange (also called the CX).

Some of the same things that award non-combat experience also award small amounts of money, but you can also make pretty good money selling abandoned loot from the forests around town. Read "help rules" in-game first; if another player is already in a room, always ask before just taking stuff off the ground.

Scavenging loot can be really easy sometimes. If artificers need to kill orcs, goblins, packrats, or humans in order to brew their oils, you may find large quantities of equipment and small piles of coins from those things lying around, free for the taking.

You can also try your luck investing in trade routes upstairs from the CX.

Depending on your class, you may also earn money by doing things for other players.

  • Mages can earn by casting various spells like enhance skill, armour, and especially permanency.
  • Clerics may be needed to purge players or uncurse equipment.
  • Artificers can charge for making equipment.
  • Rangers can forage herbs to distill into medicine, which many players are happy to buy. Rangers who aren't using bolas can also sell their excess sinew to those who are.

Keeping Money

Gold coins exist in a weightless form on your character. They are saved between logouts and reboots. They can be dropped, picked up, stolen by rogues, and eaten by goldworms. When you die, any coins on your character are deposited on your corpse, where they may be looted by other players and some NPCs.

The safest place to keep excess coins is in a bank! You won't earn any interest, but player money cannot be stolen from banks.

  • Tantallon Bank: 3w s e from the crossroads
  • Hobbitat Bank: all n ne 2n e ne n 3w from crossroads in Tantallon; from the north side of Hobbitat: s 2w
  • Gemynd Bank: from the east gate, 2w 2s w n; from the north gate, 5s 2e n

The "score" command shows the total amount of money you have in banks and on your character. The "banks" command shows how much money is stored at each bank.
